Pantheism

Pantheism is the view that the Universe (Nature) and God (or divinity) are identical. Pantheists thus do not believe in a personal, anthropomorphic or creator god. The word derives from the Greek (pan) meaning "all" and the Greek (theos) meaning "God". As such, Pantheism denotes the idea that "God" is best seen as a process of relating to the Universe. Although there are divergences within Pantheism, the central ideas found in almost all versions are the Cosmos as an all-encompassing unity and the sacredness of Nature. There is no official universal symbol for all types of Pantheism, but one icon is used by the World Pantheist Movement (WPM): the spiral as seen in the curves of the nautilus shell, or in the spiral arms of a galaxy, showing the link between the cosmic physical and the biological. The spiral represents a variety of things: it means evolution, eternity, spirituality, growth. Sometimes the Nautilus spiral alone is used; it embodies the Fibonacci series and the golden ratio. In Pantheism, God is identical with the universe, but in Panentheism God lies within and also beyond or outside of the universe. From Google Video Search: "pantheism" What is the difference between Pantheism and Atheism? Q. Richard Dawkins in "The God Delusion" advances his opinion that "Pantheism is sexed-up Atheism". This left me somewhat puzzled. It occurred to me that perhaps I didn't really know what Pantheism was, though I thought I did. So what do you think the difference is? I should be especially pleased to have answers from Pantheists and Atheists. Asked by Cosimo )O( - Fri May 14 18:42:51 2010 - - 18 Answers - 1 Comments A. When you hear Richard Dawkins calling Pantheism "sexed-up atheism" he is referring to Natural/Scientific Pantheism---which is more or less belief sans religion. The link Universal Pantstheist provided you with to the World Pantheist Movement's website is for Natural/Scientific Pantheism. What makes it similar to atheism is the lack of belief in a personal god (or a god that meddles in human lives). Pantheism in general simply means that one believes all (pan) is god (theos). The "all is god" terminology came about at a time when the easiest way to explain this belief was to include theism in the name. The best definition (in my opinion) of Pantheism is that "nature is divine". This is not to say nature is a… [cont.] Answered by BlackHoles - Fri May 14 23:48:53 2010 Are there any similarities between Pantheism and Druidism?
Q. They're both semi-nature oriented, although pantheism contains a much broader (universal) focus. Any input? Asked by Necromancer - Tue Mar 10 22:35:07 2009 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments A. Most Druids are Pantheists, and have just as broad a focus. OK, I'm going to amend my statement. There are two distinct forms that are referred to as Druidism. Revivalist Druidism, which is based off of the 18th century Druidic revival (heavily influenced by Masonry, Rosicrucian, Wicca and other factors). Re-constructionist Druidry (or just Celtic reconstruction) which is based off of anthropological information of what our Celtic ancestors believed. Re-constructionist Druidry is heavily Pantheism based. @ Gypsy: My apologies, I "thumbs down" without taking into account that many people are not as familiar with CR perspective and are more accustomed to "revivalist Druidry". You have always proven to be well versed… [cont.] Answered by Nighttree - Tue Mar 10 22:45:58 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "pantheism" |
